Student Marketing Increases Concert Sales on SRU's Campus

For this data visualization assignment I looked at how many tickets were sold for concerts at Slippery Rock that were promoted by the University Program Board. After getting the ticket sales information from Derek Brewer, I also looked at how much social media promotion was used through the University Program Board's Twitter and Instagram pages for each concert. The goal of this was to see if there was any correlation between the amount of promotion that UPB did and the amount of tickets that were sold.

Of course, having a big artist like Lil Wayne or Brett Young at Slippery Rock will sell tickets on its own, but without the hard work of students promoting these events, it is hard to imagine that as many tickets would have been sold.

When I spoke with Derek, he brought to my attention that typically fall concerts are booked to have smaller artists or bands such as Mayday Parade compared to the spring concerts such as Brett Young. I made sure to label each artist in the graph to represent them as a spring or fall concert. By hovering over the graphs with your cursor, you will see in the text if it is a spring or fall concert.

As this data chart will show, the spring concerts such as Brett Young and Lil Wayne sold the most out of any of the other concerts. It is also important to know that Mayday Parade and Simple Plan were sold out shows as well.

For this chart, I went back and looked through all the social media posts on Twitter and Instagram from the first announcement to the day of the concert. Surprisingly, Brett Young was tied with Simple Plan for the lowest amount of social media posts.

I got all this information from Derek Brewer who was also kind enough to be interviewed about the work that goes into booking the talent for Slippery Rock.

Overall, I believe that this is very important information to know because the University Program Board is run completely by students and their hard work has consistently paid off over the years. It is also important to know about because it is a very easy organization to join and be a part of for a student of any academic year.
